Sustainable development and the future of our planet

Living in close contact with nature makes us feel happy and in peace with the world and ourselves. The pleasure to be surrounded by nature should be ordinary and not occasional; in this way we would live a better life. Recovering our bond with nature and redressing the balance between man and the environment is possible, we just have to take action. But, is it possible to combine the protection of our planet with economic development and scientific progress? The answer is yes, thanks to ‘sustainable development’. It has been defined by the Conference of Stockholm on Human Environment (1972), by the Brundtland Commission and by the Agenda 21 action plan as development that “meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development promotes the protection of the resources of the planet and of biodiversity, it limits the human impact on the environment, fosters a moderate use of natural resources (allowing the planet to renew its resources according to its biocapacity), reduces the emissions of polluting substances and boosts the balance between man and the environment.
